Just as something accursed is set apart for destruction, so something devoted to God is set apart for His use. Devoted things: ‘cherem’; extermination: - thing devoted to destruction or set apart exclusively for holy use. (Both terms Dt 7:2, Joshua 6; 7; 8; 10; 11) Satan: ‘abaddown’; Hades: - Abaddon [see Rev 9:11] Greek Word Study: Sanctify: ‘hagiazo’: to make holy: purify or consecrate, (set apart as) holy sacred, sanctify (John 17:17-19) Sanctification; ‘hagiasmos’: purification, i.e. (the state of) purity, a purifier: - holiness, sanctification. Noun from hagiazo, to sanctify. Sometimes translated “holiness”; separation unto God (1Cor 1:30; 2 Th. 2:13) Sanctification by the Holy Spirit, meaning produced by Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2) Hagiasmos refers not only to the activity of the Holy Spirit in setting man apart unto salvation and transferring him into the ranks of the Redeemed, but also to enabling him to be holy even as God is holy (2 Th. 2:13) Satan: “Appoluon”: a destroyer (i.e. Satan): - Apollyon To destroy; to corrupt. The destroyer (Rev. 9:11)
