Joshua 8:21: Hebrew Word Study: “the smoke of the city went up to heaven”: Burnt Offering: olah; a step or (collective) stairs, as ascending, usually, a holocaust (as going up in smoke); - burnt offering (sacrifice): The total burning of the sacrifice indicates the total consecration of the presenter to the Lord.
 
ESV Commentator: “If there is not ultimate destruction of all God’s enemies, there can be no guarantee of the ultimate inviolability of His Eternal Kingdom of Love, Joy and Peace. The opposition has to be vanquished and removed if the Kingdom of God is to rule in the New Creation.”
