A masc. noun meaning a servant, a slave. Although the most basic concept of this term is that of a slave, biblical slavery was not the same as the slavery of modern times. The Term is also applied to those who worship God (Ne 1:10). The phrase, the servant of the Lord, is the most outstanding reference to the Messiah in the OT (Isaiah 42:1, 19; 43:10; 49:3. 5-7; 52:13; 53:11) Gk: servant: doulos: a slave, (Lit. of Fig., involuntary or voluntary; frequently therefore in a qualified sense of subjection of subservience): - (Bond-) servant, slave. N. (I) Spoken of Involuntary service: a slave as opposed to a free man (1 Cor. 7:21, Gal. 3:28, Col 3:11, Rev. 6:15). Also, generally; a servant (Mt. 13:27-28, Jn. 4:51, Ac. 2:18, Eph. 6:5; 1 Ti. 6:1; Sept.: Lev. 25:44; Joshua 9:27) In Php. 2:7, “having taken the form of a servant” means appearing in a humble and despised condition. (II) Metaphorically, speaking of voluntary service; implying obedience, devotion. Hb: covenant: beriyth: a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh): - allies, covenant, be in league with, treaty. A fem. Noun meaning covenant, treaty alliance, agreement. The Lord never broke His covenants, He always remembered a covenant.
