(Eph 2:1, 5; Col 2:13; Rev 3:1) World: ‘kosmos’: from ‘komeo’: orderly arrangement; (by imp) the world, inc. its inhabitants (lit or fig) [moral] In the Jewish mode of speaking: the present world, the present order of things, as opposed to the kingdom of Christ; hence, always with the idea of transience, worthlessness, and evil both physical and moral, the seat of cares, temptations, irregular desires. (Eph 2:2 and many others) Sons: ‘uihos’: hwee’-os: (fig) means the son of something as one connected with or partaking of; sons of disobedience. Followed by the genitive implying character, quality (Eph 2:2) Passions: ‘epithumia’: a longing (esp. for what is forbidden), a lusting; Noun meaning strong desire in a bad sense: irregular and inordinate desires, appetites, lusts; the lust of the flesh means carnal desires (Eph 2:2) Flesh: ‘sarx’: Human nature (with its frailties [physical or moral] and passions). Noun meaning flesh of a living creature in distinction from a dead one. By metonymy, flesh as used for the body, the corpus, the material nature as distinguished from the spiritual (pneuma, spirit). As implying sinfulness, proneness to sin, the carnal nature, the seat of carnal appetites and desires, whether physical or moral (Eph 2:3 and many others); by metonymy flesh, human nature, man. By nature: ‘phusis’: (by imp): natural production, (lineal descent), by extension: a genus, species (Fig) native disposition, by birth, mankind. (Eph 2:3) Made us alive together: ‘suzoopoieo’: sudzo-poy-A-oh: to reanimate conjointly with, (fig): to make alive together with; from sun (together) and zoopoieo (to revitalize, to make alive, come to (give) Life) (Eph 2:5) Raised us up with Him: ‘sunegeiro’: soon-eg-I-ro: to rouse (from death) in company with i.e. (fig) to revivify spiritually in resemblance to Christ: - raise up with from ‘sun’ (together) and ‘egeiro’ (to raise): to raise up together. Used in the NT of being raised up together with Christ. Sunegeiro does not refer to merely being raised in the likeness of Christ’s Resurrection, but rather, it points to a condition or work effected by union with Christ in His resurrection, taking place in, and proceeding from it. (Eph 2:6; Col 2:12-14; 3:1)
